Prevention is better than cure

While leather repairs are certainly possible and it’s great that you can breathe new life into old leather relatively easily, caring for the material will help keep any necessary repairs to a minimum.

Keeping your shoes clean is the first step in ensuring that your footwear continues to serve you well and keep you looking dapper. Give them a good (but gentle) dust down regularly with a soft brush to get rid of any lingering dirt and debris, then store them in a shoe bag to afford them even greater protection.

For a deeper clean, use saddle soap if your shoes don’t have a finish and mild soap and a soft cloth if they do. If you’re using saddle soap, leave the shoes to dry naturally so that the soap works to seal the material.

Wax on, wax off!

Invest in a good-quality wax polish to keep your leather uppers in excellent condition. Use a small amount of polish on a soft cloth and apply it in a gentle circular motion. You’ll find that the wax starts to melt and becomes easier to move around. Once you’ve covered the whole shoe, all you need to do then is use a good buffing brush to go over the material in quick sideways motions. Before you know it, your shoes will have a lovely beautiful shine.

Keep an eye on the soles

The health of the soles is just as important as the health of the leather itself, so give them a glance every six months or so and head off for some shoe repairs if you see any problems manifesting themselves. High-heeled shoes can be dangerous if you don’t keep an eye on them and you’ll radically reduce your chances of slips and falls with just a little bit of TLC from time to time.
